The purpose of this presentation is to show several options for grinding grains into flour.

Grinding grains, equipment and details.

Grains have been a major source of foods for millennium. Preparing the grains for use has involved rolling, grinding, mashing etc.

Device DB Range Time to grind 2 Cups (fine) Notes Functionality
Marcato Mara Mulino 60-80 Mostly 60-70 Great way to prepare cracked wheat, rolled oats etc. Roller Mill
Back To Basics 60-80 mostly 60-70 ? Slow. Versatile hand grinder. Stainless Steel Grinder
Kitchen Mill 85-95 1 - 1.3 Minutes depending on how course the grind Extremely noisy! Extremely durable! Wear Hearing protection ! Fixed Metal base - Rotating Metal Blade
Marathon Mill 75-80 ! Minute to grind 2 Cups of Hard White Wheat
Limited space for ground grain. Bulky. Hard to clean. Very heavy! Fixed Base man made Stone and Rotating man made Stone Grinder
Electric Wonder Mill 80-85 1 - 1.3 Minutes depending on how course the grind Easily converted to continuous use. Stainless Steel Milling Heads
High-Speed Multi-function Crusher Capacity 1000G other capacities available 80-90 35 seconds
Very fast. Noisy. Harder to clean. Limited amount to grind per session - 1000G - and easier to over heat. High Speed Rotating Stainless Steel Blades
Vitamix 70-80 1+ minutes to grind 2 cups of grain Use Dry Grain Container High Speed Rotating Stainless Steel Blades

One Electric grain grinder can potentialy provide flour for several people. If you need flour ground only occasionally you might be able to locate someone close that can grind grain for you. Freshly ground flour preserves nutritional value.
Families may choose to have one family member have a grinder for the use of all members of the family.

NOTES

The temperature of freshly ground grains is of note. Hand driven grain grinders typically have a lower temperature for the flour during and shortly after grinding. Electric grinders typically grind faster and the flour has a higher than ambient temperature because of the flour packed together with the flour that has just been ground. Using frozen grain assists in lowering the temperature of the freshly ground flour.
Flour ground by the Marathon Mill was 5 degrees F above ambient temperature after grinding and returned to the ambient temperature within 10 minutes.
Flour temperature below 30 to 50 degrees F above ambient tenperature after grinding is within normal range and typically cools within minutes of grinding. Grain that is ground shortly before baking reduces nutrient decay. Minimal decay of nutrients occurs within 73 hours of grinding.
