Evacuation Check List
For adverse weather conditions consider leaving the circuit breakers for furnace, freezer and refrigerator on.
All power to the home can be disconnected by turning off the outside power supply.
The following checklist provides the basic items to cover - you should add items specific to your circumstances (health needs, etc.).
Turn off and unplug appliances and lights - Disconnecting prevents power surges from destroying your electrical devices.
Turn off all water faucets inside and out (including sprinklers).
Lock and close all windows.
Do not leave pets alone.
Put away all outdoor items.
Close and lock all buildings.
Take with you all irreplaceable items.
Pack up, lock up and leave.
Shut off utilities in the following order:
GAS
Close the shut off valve (typically next to the gas meter).
Do not use any electrical equipment until there is no odor of gas.
Ventilate your home by opening windows and doors.
Evacuate everyone from your home.
Notify the Natural Gas Office nearest to you.
Electricity
The cut off switch on the utility line to your home will disconnect all power to your home.
Individual curcuits can be shut off by pulling the fuses or tripping the individual breakers.
Shutting off all power to the home will affect heat, cooling, refrigeration etc.
Water
Water can be turned off inside the home where the water comes into the house, or:
On the water line between the curb and the sidewalk (a special tool may be required to shut this off).
Most Valves turn off clockwise
